Criminal Defense
What Is Your Experience In Handling Criminal Defense Cases For Clients In Michigan?
I began my legal career as a prosecutor in Macomb County, one of Michigan’s largest jurisdictions. In that role, I served as the Chief Criminal Sexual Conduct prosecutor, overseeing cases involving children and vulnerable adults and managing that entire division.
During that time, it became clear that the probation system was not functioning as effectively as it should. We saw consistent patterns of probation violations and repeat offenses. A major factor behind these outcomes was poor communication between the courts, probation officers, defendants, and outside support services such as counselors and treatment providers.
Former Prosecutor Turned Criminal Defense Attorney
After transitioning into criminal defense, I spent decades representing thousands of individuals facing a wide range of charges. Throughout those years, I continued to see the same communication breakdowns between defendants and the systems meant to support them during supervision.
At one point, I lost several clients to overdoses within a relatively short period. Attending those funerals forced a deeper look into why individuals under court supervision, particularly those struggling with substance abuse, were not succeeding. It became clear that the system was failing to provide consistent guidance, accountability, and support.
To better understand the issue, I worked alongside judges, probation officers, administrators, and fellow attorneys to study the problem more closely. The conclusion was straightforward: the lack of coordinated communication between all parties involved was contributing directly to negative outcomes. Defendants were not receiving the structure or clarity they needed, and agencies often lacked the information required to effectively assist them.
At the same time, many court systems were still relying on outdated, paper-heavy processes that slowed everything down and created unnecessary confusion. Important information was siloed, and different parties were often operating without full visibility into a case.
To address these issues, we developed a more modern, digital approach designed to streamline communication and improve oversight throughout both pretrial and probation supervision. The goal was simple: create a system that keeps everyone informed, connected, and accountable.
Why Successful Probation Outcomes Matter for Your Future
I am an experienced criminal lawyer who has prosecuted and defended approximately 10,000 clients over the course of my career. I have represented both the State and individuals accused of offenses ranging from minor infractions to the most serious criminal charges.
For many people, probation is seen as the easier alternative to jail. In reality, it comes with strict requirements, constant oversight, and serious consequences for even small mistakes. A missed check-in, failed test, or misunderstanding of the rules can quickly lead to violations, additional charges, or incarceration.
Whether someone has been wrongly accused or is facing legitimate charges, their future should not be determined by confusion, lack of guidance, or poor communication. When defendants clearly understand what is expected of them and have consistent access to information and support, they are far more likely to stay compliant and avoid further legal trouble.
Even small improvements in communication and accountability can make a significant difference. When expectations are clear and systems are reliable, probation becomes something that can be successfully completed rather than something that leads to repeated setbacks.
CourtWorks was built with that purpose in mind. It provides a structured, modern approach to supervision that improves communication, increases accountability, and helps individuals stay on track. The goal is simple: reduce violations, avoid unnecessary penalties, and give people a better chance at moving forward without further damage to their record or their future.
