Speeding Ticket
Speeding Ticket Attorney & Traffic Ticket Lawyer
If you have recently received a speeding ticket in Michigan, you may have more options than you think. Many drivers simply pay the ticket, but doing so is considered an admission of guilt and can lead to points on your record, increased insurance rates, and long-term consequences.
Our firm represents drivers who want to challenge their tickets and protect their driving record. We understand Michigan traffic laws and take a detailed approach to reviewing each case, looking for opportunities to reduce or dismiss the charge whenever possible.
If you intend to fight your ticket, it is important to attend your scheduled court date. Ignoring the process or paying the fine without exploring your options can limit your ability to achieve a better outcome. In many cases, tickets can be negotiated down to less serious offenses that carry fewer or no points.
A speeding violation can impact more than just your immediate situation. Insurance premiums often increase after a ticket, and the long-term cost can add up significantly depending on your driving history and the severity of the offense.
With decades of combined experience, our attorneys are committed to helping clients protect their licenses and avoid unnecessary penalties. We work to resolve cases efficiently while minimizing the impact on your record.
Michigan Driver Improvement Program
Michigan offers a program that allows certain drivers to avoid points on their record for eligible traffic violations by completing a Basic Driver Improvement Course.
Under this program, drivers cited for minor offenses such as speeding or improper driving may qualify to keep points off their record by completing an approved course and paying applicable fines and court costs. Eligible drivers are notified by the Michigan Department of State and typically have 60 days to complete the course.
Key details of the program include:
- Courses may be completed online or in a classroom setting
- Approved providers offer state-certified defensive driving instruction
- Drivers may retake the course within the eligibility window if needed
- Course fees are set by the provider but are capped
Even if you qualify, completing the program does not eliminate fines or court costs. It only prevents points from being added to your driving record.
If you have received a speeding ticket or want to know whether you qualify for this program, speaking with an attorney can help you understand your options and choose the best path forward.
The fee for the course is determined by the provider, with the total not to exceed $100. Drivers are still responsible for paying fines and court costs involved in the traffic violation. The course may only be used once to avoid points.
A driver is not eligible if he or she:
- is in the 60-day period of course eligibility for a previous ticket.
- has already avoided points under the program.
- has a restricted, suspended or revoked license or was not issued a Michigan license.
- has three or more points on his or her record.
- held a commercial driver license or was operating a commercial vehicle at the time of the ticket.
- received a ticket that is not eligible for the program.
